EBURRU SCHOOL
The village of Eburru is situated 85km Northwest of the capital Nairobi, on the North side of Lake Naivasha.
The village sits on top of a hill and looks out over the Great Rift Valley. It’s a beautiful but very poor village of around 20 thousand people from 10 different tribes. The area has no running water, rivers or streams, so the village depends mainly on steam water that comes up through the volcanic earth and is cooled down by makeshift geysers. The land is fertile – maize, beans, vegetables and fruit are grown and consumed locally. A rainwater collection tank has been built at the school which means that the school is self sufficient in water throughout the year. Eburru Secondary School shares a Global Partnership with Langley Park School for Girls in the UK.
The Art club at Eburru started in October 2009, after an Art teacher from Langley Park Girls visited and taught at Eburru. The pupils enjoyed drawing from observation using pencil and pastel. During the week, the pupils focussed on their beautiful landscape and the trees, whilst considering the issues surrounding 'Deforestation'. The pupils also wrote some wonderful poems about the importance of trees; these were sent to the Langley Park pupils to enjoy and respond to in their own artwork.
Since then, Eburru pupils have continued to enjoy regular painting workshops provided by MASK, as well as Art club sessions run by the dedicated teachers at the school.
