THE MASK ART PRIZE is the annual national art competition with Prizes that is open to all young people in Kenya.

 

The purpose of THE MASK ART PRIZE is to encourage creative education, engage young people in visual art and show their talent to national and international audiences.   

 

Prizes

  • The three BEST artists will be awarded a prize of 55,000 Ksh each

  • One WINNING artist will be awarded a trip to London to coincide with MASK ART PRIZE exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London in September 2013. (If this artist is 18 years old or older he/she will require to have a valid national ID card in order to travel). 

  • One STATE school with the best and highest number of art works submitted by its pupils will be awarded a year’s supply of art materials worth 100,000 Ksh.

  • The winning artists and the representatives of the winning school will be invited to the Prize Giving ceremony in Nairobi where Kenyan officials and celebrities will present the prizes.

The Prizes are supported by the Rivers Foundation.

 

 

Exhibitions

 

The shortlisted artworks will be exhibited at the:

  • Cultural Dynamics Gallery at the Nairobi National Museum, 10 June - 10 July 2013. 
  • Saatchi Gallery in London, 14 September - 13 October 2013. 

 

 

Judges

 

The Judging Panel is comprised of world-renowned artists:

  • Michael Craig-Martin, Tai Schierenberg, Kaye Umansky, Anthony Browne, Tom de Freston
  • Kivuthi Mbuno and Jak Katarikawe
  • Alla Tkachuk, Founding Director of MASK
  • Jennifer Wambugu, Head of Creative Arts at the Kenya Institute of Education
  • Lydia Galavu, Contemporary Art Curator at the Kenya National Museums

    ENTRY RULES

     

    WHO CAN ENTER: Anyone up to the age of 25 years old who lives in Kenya, or a member of the Kenyan diaspora.

     

    ARTWORK: Any number of artworks on paper or canvas (paintings, drawings, prints, collages made or works made out of recycled or natural materials) on the 2013 MASK ART PRIZE theme ‘What makes you proud about Kenya’. Text can form part of the artwork. The artwork should be original and unaided.

     

    The artwork must not be smaller than A4 (30 x 21 cm) or larger than A1 (85 x 60 cm).

     

    Each artwork will be judged on the ideas represented and quality of execution in the age categories:

  • Early Childhood schools (3-6 years old), both state and private

  • Primary Schools (7-15), state and private

  • Secondary Schools (16-25), state and private, including polytechnics, college and university students.

    PLEASE NOTE: The organisers are not able to return any artworks sent, or provide art materials.

     

    DEADLINE for entering the artworks is 1 May 2013.

     

    HOW TO ENTER Please send your best artworks to: Elsamere Centre, P.O. Box 1497, Naivasha, KENYA.  You MUST include the following information at the back of the artwork (WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION YOUR WORK WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED):

    Title of the artwork

    Name of the artist, age, and home address

    School address (in full), any teachers’ names

    Mobile telephone number, email, and Facebook address (if any)
